May 9, 16, 23, 2018     Home School Orienteering Experience
    Series of daytime events for Home-schooled students and their families in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Students will get beginner instruction in basic orienteering skills and have the opportunity to try beginner and intermediate level courses in a controlled environment.

    3 short courses of easy to medium difficulty. National Trails Day. Join MetroParks for ribbon cutting ceremony on the new section of Great Miami River multi-use trail, then join OCIN for orienteering in the park. Trail opening ceremony and ribbon cutting 10 am - 10:30; Orienteering starts will be open immediately following the ceremony, until 12 noon. Several other outdoor activities will also be offered, including birding, bikes, yoga on the trail, nature journaling. Courses by Mike Minium; Event Day Directors: Ben Hart and Stephanie Ross. Orienteering evcent fee: $5 per person; $15 family maximum.
    MetroParks of Butler County motor vehicle permit is required and will be available on site. Permit is free for Butler County residents with ID. Non-resident permit is $5 daily or $10 annual, valid at all MetroParks of Butler County.

    The Amazing Charity race is a home-town multi-sport version of the Amazing Race TV show, with proceeds benefiting local charities. OCIN will host a navigation portion of the race, but we can't tell you where. Helpers will be needed that day, please contact Mike Minium if you can help.     Details to be announced. This event is part of the annual Cincinnati Great Outdoors Weekend (GOW). This event is also part of Miami University Natural Areas Hike-athon Plus. Visit various exhibits and try various other outdoor activities including hikes, guided bird-watching walks, etc. A naturalist from Hueston Woods will be there with live raptors (hawks and owls). There are usually free samples of all-natural food or drink, and sometimes free native plants or seelings to take home.

Events will include navigation training activities on Saturday morning, team courses on Saturday afternoon, a Saturday evening Night score-orienteering course, and the Sunday morning Scout Orienteering Championships.     Full range of courses from white to red. Start times 11 am - 1 pm. Normal OCIN event fees: $7 for members, $10 for non-members, $2 discount if you own your own SI card, free for TROL and WARS season pass holders.

    Locator Map. Directions: From I-275, take I-71 north for 6.2 miles, and take exit 24 to Western Row Rd. Turn right on Western Row Rd for 1.3 miles. Turn left on Socialville-Foster Rd for 1 mile. Turn left on Old 3C highway for less than 0.1 mile, then turn right to stay on old 3C highway for 0.1 mile. Turn right on Foster-Maineville Rd for 0.3 mile, then right on Butterworth Rd for 0.5 mile and watch for the camp entrance on the right.

    An all-day training program geared mainly toward students participating in the TROL youth league, but open to everyone. There will be an alternating mix of indoor instruction and outdoor courses and training activities. Be prepared to be outside several times throughout the day. Lunch sandwiches and dinner pizza are included. Pre-registration is required.
