“A” Meet & World Ranking Event
April 12-14, 2002,   Lebanon, Ohio
35 miles northeast of Cincinnati, Ohio on I-71

The Pig Sprint, Friday, April 12
    A short-course format event with late afternoon starts.
    Camp Whip-poor-will, Girl Scout Camp.
    Organized by Miami Valley Orienteering Club (MVOC).
    Course Setter: Matt Bond. Vetter: Steve Barnhart.
    Start and finish will be within view of parking, less than 150 meters.

The Classic, Saturday, April 13
    Classic distance races including a World Ranking Event.
    Map: Fort Ancient and adjacent camps.  Start at Camp Swoneky.
    Organized by Orienteering Cincinnati (OCIN).
    Course Setter: Steve Vaughan Controller: Sheldon Friesen.
    Start will be less than 400 meters level walk from parking.
    Finish will be within 200 meters of parking and probably visible from most parking.

The Farsta, Sunday, April 14
    Brown, green, red and blue courses will mass start in an exciting “one person relay” format.
    Orange, yellow and white will have regular interval starts.  Courses will be classic length.

    Map: Fort Ancient.  Start at Fort Ancient State Historic Site.
    Organized by Orienteering Cincinnati (OCIN).
    Course Setter: Mike Minium.
    Start and finish will be within view of parking, less than 150 meters.

Directions
    I-71 exit #36.
    Go right (east) on Wilmington Rd.
    Immediately turn right on Middleboro Rd, then follow “orienteering” signs.
    All starts will be within 5 miles of the exit, either directly off Middleboro Rd.
or off Ohio rt. 350 west of Middleboro.  Details are below.
    Friday
                    Continue south on Middleboro Road about 3 miles.
                    You will cross OH 350 and pass Strout Rd on right.
                    Enter Camp Whip-Poor-Will on right.
    Saturday
                    Within 1 mile, turn right into Camp Swoneky.
    Sunday
                    Go south on Middleboro less than 2 miles.
                    Turn right on OH 350 for about 1 mile.
                    Turn left into Fort Ancient State Historic Site.
    Large Vehicle Advisory
                    Trucks and campers must not atempt to use OH 350 west of Fort Ancient.
                    (between Fort Ancient and I-71).
                    Steep grades and hairpin turns make this route impassable for large vehicles.

Schedule
March 22        Last day to enter without late fee.

April 12           Sprint starts from 2 pm to 4 pm.
                       Evening check-in, location tba.

April 13          WRE starts 9 to 11 am.
                       Regular starts 11 am - 1 pm.
                       Dinner, 6 pm.

April 14          Mass start 10 am.
                      Awards 1:30 pm.

Courses and Classes
    All standard USOF courses and classes will be offered.
    Note that F 50+ and F 55+ are moved to brown course this year.

World Ranking Event
    All entrants on M-21+ blue and F-21+ red will be included in the WRE
unless you ask NOT to be included on your entry form.  The WRE start times
will be assigned by random draw and can not be changed.  Note that WRE
participants start before other courses.  The WRE is Saturday only.
    If you do not want to participate in the WRE, you will have a regular start
time after 11 am.  Courses: Mike Minium, Controller: Sheldon Friesen.

Awards
    Separate awards will be given for each day of competition.
    Awards to top 3 places in “age classes” and 1st place in “course classes”.

Recreational Courses
    Recreational courses will be offered on white, yellow and orange.
    Day of event registration only. $5 per person or group sharing a map.
    No awards are given or times recorded on recreational courses.

Punching
    The SportIdent electronic punching system will be used for all courses.
    Be sure to put your SI number on the registration form.
    Rental cards are available for a fee.  See registration form.

Terrain and Maps
    All maps will be 1:10,000, 5 m. contour.
    Generally, this is typical Midwest ridge and valley terrain with mixed
hardwood forests. Expect some very steep sections.
    The Fort Ancient area has many pre-historic earthworks
and mounds.  Crossing over the top of the earthworks is prohibited.  Fort
Ancient sits atop steep bluffs which drop almost 100 meters to the Little Miami
River.  Fort Ancient is a new map, so no preview will be available but a
small area will be open for training on Friday.
    An old (1:7500) map of Camp Whip-poor-will will be available for viewing
at registration, but there are not copies available for sale.

Shirts
    T-shirts designed by OCIN artist extraordinaire, Greg Sack.
    Shirt will include a reproduction of an historic map of the Fort Ancient earthworks!

Dinner
    Dinner is a fund raiser for U.S. junior orienteers.
    Proposed menu (subject to change): Awesome Chicken,
Vegetarian Cincinnati Style Chili, Cornbread, Broccoli, Salad,
contributed desserts, Iced Tea and Lemonade

Lodging
    We will be offering dormitory bunks, cabins and camping at Camp Swoneky

Child Sitting
    Please let us know early if you will need this service.
    Child sitting will NOT be offered if we have no requests by March 22!
    $3 per hour for first child, $2 for each additional child from same family.
    Child Sitting fees are payable at event, directly to sitter.

Park Fees
    The site use fee for Fort Ancient will be $4 per person for the weekend.
OCIN will collect this fee when you check in at the event.
You must pay this fee if you are doing any of the following:
    1. orienteering on Saturday, March 13 or Sunday, March 14
    2. visiting Fort Ancient site or museum on Sat. or Sun.
    3. non-orienteering family member who will be entering the Ft. Ancient site.
This is a discount over the normal entry of $5 per person per day
    and will get you into the site on BOTH days.
You do not need to pay the fee if you are only orienteering on Friday
    and will not be visiting the Fort Ancient site.
Fort Ancient's site director, Jack Blosser, will be guest speaker at the
    Saturday evening dinner and will give a brief presentation on the history
    and archaeology of the Fort Ancient earthworks.
    Fort Ancient is operated by the Ohio Historical Society.
