Flying Pig XIV Practice and Training Maps

East Fork State Park, April 9-11, 2010

Two mapped areas which are open for training and practice during the Pig. The South area is now open and will remain open through Friday, April 9. The North area is now open, and will remain open through Saturday, April 10. Practice areas have stands and controls identical to those which will be used in Saturday and Sunday competition (except without SI units). Stands used in Friday's competition are not as sturdy (they may flex) and control flags used on Friday may not have the blue stripe. Practice areas are self-service and controls may be visited in any order. You may encounter horses in the North practice area; please yield the trail and do not run in the vicinity of horses. Note that you must stay within these mapped practice areas. If you enter competition areas before the event, you could be disqualified.

Taken together, the two areas give a good idea of likely control sites, vegetation, and topography for the Pig. The South area has more flat areas and no horse trails, while the north area shows more of the steeper terrain present on all days. But, both areas have some of each terrain type. Try to get some practice in both the steeper and very flat areas, and definitely check out the different shades of green vegetation. In the South area, control 235 is at the end of a very ruined, almost non-existent fence. Note how even where the wire is completely gone, a distinct line of trees is visible. You may encounter fences like this on your course, although none that are this far gone have been used for control sites.

You may download maps here and print your own copies, or you may pick up copies beginning Thursday morning, April 8, at the Event headquarters Holiday Inn.
