Weather: After weeks of snow and temperatures rarely rising above freeing, the high on New Year’s Eve exceeded 60 F (16 C). Snow melted away and the ground became slippery, then soggy. Light rain showers proved pesky, but not serious, and there was even a rumble or two of thunder in the wee hours of New Year’s Day. It stayed warm overnight, with temperatures only beginning to drop again in late afternoon.
