This was a fun event in a park that has a lot of open land and fast running, but also offers some very tricky little areas like the floral gardens, some little patches of woods with twisty trails, and a couple tricky buildings and fences. The new pickleball courts had not been added to the map, but I’m not aware of anyone being overly confused by them.

Rex made the courses even trickier by placing 5 fake controls (stand and flag but no punch) to deceive runners approaching the real controls. This is not a normal practice, and while the intent was simply to make runners read carefully and maybe lose a few seconds if they were careless, it did cause a couple people to mis-punch by simply assuming that the SportIdent box was gone. For those people who didn’t punch at all, Stephanie Ross and Bill Greenwell, we gave credit, but we penalized 1 min per mispunch, so Stephanie is +2min and Bill is +1min. The penalty is added to their split time for the last control to finish, but gives them a valid finish time instead of a “mispunch”. (Other mispunches are not believed to be related to the deceptor controls)

Comment by Matthew Robbins: I really enjoyed the Long course. Some legs were long enough to have multiple route choices, and the additional control stands made it very tricky. My experience was when I see a flag that's "reasonable", I usually stop navigating. It was a good tool to keep you on your toes. Stephanie in particular didn't know there were extra controls and therefore wasn't checking control codes like I was.

Most orienteers arrived early in the start window and got in a course (or even two for some of the speedsters) before the approaching rain arrived. We got to see the approach of a spectacular shelf cloud, spanning the sky horizon to horizon, then with a little gust of wind, there was a period of light rain, then a very intense downpour. The rain brought welcome relief from the heat and humidity of a sticky Cincinnati day, but left quite a few of us soaked.
