A day and a half of torrential rain that changed to heavy snow just before dawn turned the park into a winter wonderland, and set the stage for an awesome winter challenge.  Every branch and twig of the honeysuckle bushes so prevalent in this park hung low under a load of two inches of snow, just waiting to dump on any orienteer who dared to push through.  Visibility was often reduced to just a few meters – it was like night orienteering in the fog.  Jacket pockets quickly collected enough snow to arm both sides of a major snowball war (well, maybe not quite).  Beneath the snow lurked gooey, slippery mud, and well-worn trails often were more like linear marshes.   Jasper’s well-concealed controls were even more hidden by an accumulation of snow, and even after the loose snow was brushed off the control units, it wasn’t always possible to read the code through a layer of crusty snow and ice.   Green and red courses were somewhat shortened as the main streams were rushing torrents, and it was felt that the crossings would be too much to ask.  It is not much of a stretch to wonder if the three who did manage to finish green and red would have completed the longer original courses!

The day by the numbers:

     38 pre-registered.

     23 starters.

     7 finishers.

Fortunately, all starters did return safely, some colder and wetter than others.   A tremendous thanks to those who went back out to collect the controls; amazingly they were all collected that same day!  Considering the attendance and completion rate, we probably should have cancelled.  We seriously considered it, but the weather predictions were so close to previous successful events we went ahead. We got more snow than expected, and the park roads and lots were unplowed.

But, the weather wasn't terribly cold if you were out of the wind and dry, although Amy and Jasper were stamping their feet a lot. It was not too windy (much less wind than predicted).  But the footing in the woods was pretty treacherous, and the low honeysuckle had inches of snow on each branch. One competitor said it was claustrophobic, and another said it was like night orienteering in fog---you couldn't see far, and you missed terrain features!
