Oxford, Ohio, USA

Day of Event Entries
(NEW) Day-of-event entries will be accepted for all events, but it will really help if you let us know in advance if you are coming.

Start Times
(NEW) We will not be pre-posting start times for the Freezer-O or the Sprints.  We will be very flexible with start times for the Freezer O' and The Sprints.  Note that the "Midnight in Rio" and The Billy Pig are MASS START events and it is important to be ready on time.

Saturday, December 30 - The Freezer O'
a "regular" local meet with white (2.8 km), yellow (3.5 km), orange (5.0 km), brown (4.2 km) and green (5.1 km) courses.
venue: Miami University Natural Areas, Oxford, Ohio.
Course Setter: Bill Swift

Sunday, December 31 - The Frozen Pig
TWO, not one, but TWO "A" sanctioned sprints.  Your last chance to earn USOF ranking points in 2006!  And, there's more: These races will kick off the 2007 U.S. Sprint Series, giving you an opportunity to take an early lead in the standings!  One of the sprints will use an all-new area, never previously used for orienteering.  Awards will be based on total time for both sprints, but USOF ranking points and sprint series points will be given individually for each race.  Sport-Ident electronic punching.
venue: Miami University Western Campus. Oxford, Ohio.
Course Setter: Mike Minium

Sunday, December 31 - Monday, January 1 - "Midnight" Score Orienteering
The 13th annual installment of OCIN's Midnight Orienteering event. Will it snow?  We don't know.
venue: Governor Bebb Butler County Metropark.  10 miles south of Oxford, Ohio.
This year only, we are celebrating "Midnight in Rio".  Need your beauty sleep for the Billy Pig?  Well, New Year's arrives 3 hours earlier in Rio de Janeiro.  So set your clocks ahead 3 hours, and run the "Midnight in Rio" version of our famous Midnight O'.  Mass start at 9 pm Eastern time (midnight in Rio), 90 minute score format course.  Fast, experienced orienteers can expect to find all controls.
Course Setter: Mike Minium

Monday, January 1 - Billy Pig VIII
The 8th installment of our "goat" style race returns to the park where it all began on December 18, 1999, with the inaugural Billy Pig.
If a full-length "goat" is too long for your taste, try the "Piglet".  The Billy Pig will be about 12.5 km and the Piglet about 7.5 km.  There are 3 forked controls on the Billy Pig and two on the Piglet.  You may skip one control in either race, but NOT one of the forked controls.  See Billygoat.org for a good description of a billygoat sytle course and explanations of forking and skipping.
A beginner level "white" course will be available too.
venue: Hueston Woods State Park.  6 miles north of Oxford, Ohio. Sport-Ident electronic punching.
Course Setter: Jon Rauschenbach

Directions and Locator Maps

Saturday Freezer O' -- Miami University Natural Areas    Miami University owns several square miles of wooded land, with 14 miles of hiking trails, along the eastern side of Oxford, Ohio.  From Oxford, take OH 73 east about 1.5 mile. At top of hill, turn left (north) on Oxford-Milford Rd.  In about 3/4 mile, use the marked parking areas at the farm on the right (possible parking fee by the landowner).  Walk a little farther north on Oxford-Milford to the park entrance on the left.

Sunday Frozen Pig Sprints -- Miami University Western Campus   The "Western" campus is actually located on the east-southeast side of Oxford, Ohio.  Starts will be at the Western Lodge.  From the south (Cincinnati area), take US 27 north into Oxford.  Just before the second traffic light in Oxford, turn right on Western Drive.  Follow Western Drive about 1/2 mile.  After you pass Thomson Hall on your left, look for parking along road.  Continue walking straight ahead along Western Drive past Boyd Hall and Peabody Hall (both on left).  When Western makes a very sharp right turn, continue straight to the log cabin straight ahead.  From the north or east follow US 27 south or OH 73 west to the junction of US 27 and OH 73.  Go south on US 27 and take the first left (east) onto Western Drive, then follow directions for parking as above.

Sunday Night "Midnight" Orienteering -- Governor Bebb  Governor Bebb is a Butler County Metropark located about 10 miles south of Oxford, Ohio.  Start will be at the Murnstein Hostel.  From Western Campus  Western Drive is one-way, so you'll exit by the art museum.  Turn left on US 27 and immediately right on Chestnut St.  Take Chestnut St about 1.5 miles (joining OH 732 along the way).  Where 732 turns left, turn and stay on 732. Caution: Approx 4 -5 miles south of Oxford,732 banks gently left, then sharply back to the right, entering a series of tightening, steeply descending curves, with a bridge at the bottom.  Beware of ice!  After the bridge, 732 makes a left turn in the village of Reily.  Continue on 732 for another 3 miles until it ends, then turn right on OH. 129. Caution: Shortly after turning on 129, you will go downhill and cross a railroad track with a VERY big bump.  Do not exceed 15 mph unless you are a licensed pilot and your vehicle is flight-worthy!  Go 2 miles on OH 129, then turn left on California Rd.  Go about 3/4 mile to next stop sign and turn right on OH 126.  Go about 1/2 mile and turn left on Bebb Park Rd.  Follow to end, keeping right at the one fork.  Murnstein Hostel is a log cabin, about 50 meters straight ahead from the end of the road.  A Metroparks car permit is required and may be purchased at the event.  $2 daily or 2007 annual permit for $5.

Monday Billy Pig & Piglet -- Hueston Woods  Hueston Woods is an Ohio State Park, several miles north of Oxford, Ohio.  Start will be at the Lodge.  From Oxford, take OH 732 north between 5 and 6 miles.  Turn left into Hueston Woods State Park.  After 1 mile, turn right on Main Loop Rd.  After about 2 miles, turn left tfor 1/2 mile to the lodge.  The park ahs good signage to teh lodge and tehre should also be "orienteering" signs.

Lodging
Oxford area Lodging Information

Cabin at Governor Bebb (Murnstein Hostel) is available both Saturday and Sunday nights for $8 per person per night.  Be advised, this is pioneer-primitive lodging.  The cabin is heated ONLY by wood burning fireplace and it gets cold.  If you have allergies to dust & smoke, this is not for you.  The bunks are wooden and there are no mattresses or pillows.  Bring your own bedding and pad.  The bunks are definitely not designed for the very tall.  There is very little space between bunks and essentially no privacy.  There is a small kitchen with refrigerator, stove and oven, but no running water.  It is a 50 meter or so walk to the port-o-let.  Alcohol is not permitted in the cabin or anywhere in the park.  The common room of the cabin will be the base of operations for the "Midnight" orienteering event & New Year's Party.
