"The Billy
Pig" and "The Piglet" are long-course orienteering
races, in the fine tradition of the famous Billy Goat. The Billy
Goat and its imitation "goats" around the country have become quite popular.
Besides the original Billy Goat, better known ones include the Golden Goat,
the Rocky Mountain Goat, the Bubba Goat and the Possum Trot. In the
proud tradition of Cincinnati's flying porkers, we've decided to call our
version "The Billy Pig". Pre-registration is strongly recommended.
Please use the entry form below. Please note
that late entrants will be subject to a late fee and will not be guaranteed
a pre-marked map, thus they may need to mark their own map while on the
clock.
A "goat"
is a long distance, mass-started orienteering event. Rules vary slightly,
but in general orienteers must visit controls in order, but may skip any
one control on the course. There also is usually one or more "forked
controls", for example control # 4 will have two circles on your map, labelled
as 4A and 4B. You may choose which one to visit, but need not visit
both. Making the correct decision for your abilities could move you
up in the race standings. There will be a 5-hour time limit on both
courses. The Billy Pig and Piglet are intended for people with significant
orienteering or adventure racing experience.
The
Billy Pig will be approx. 9 to 14 kilometers
straight-line distance. The Billy Pig is a test of speed,
endurance, navigational ability and strategy. It involves planning,
decision making, deception and gut-wrenching courage.
The
Piglet will be 5 to 8 kilometers distance.
The Piglet is just a shorter version of the Billy Pig. If you have
been able to handle an orange level orienteering course or above, you should
find the Piglet do-able but challenging.
This year's courses: Billy Pig will be 12 - 13 km with 20 controls, Piglet will be 6.5 - 7.5 km with 10 controls.
White
(beginner) and yellow
(intermediate) courses will also be offered, starting
at 10:30 am. No pre-registration is needed for the white or yellow courses.
White/Yellow course entry fee will be $4 for members or $6 for non-members.
These courses offer a nice taste of orienteering for people of almost any
age and ability.
