Site updates since Nov. 16:

Nov. 16 – For the Relay on Saturday, white course will use a 1:5000 map (junior-junior relay).  Yellow course will use a 1:7500 map.  All courses cross and loop, especially in the spectator area before the finish.  Be very careful not to miss a control.

Nov. 18 – Practice / Model area will be Sharon Woods which is very close to the event headquarters hotel; within a two kilometer jog.  This is also an area mapped by Vladimir Zherdev.  A Hamilton County Parks motor vehicle permit must be purchased to park inside this park (but not for any of the regular event sites this weekend).  Practice maps should be available at the headquarters hotel beginning Wednesday morning.  There may not be any actual controls put out in Sharon Woods.  Ask at the desk for “orienteering practice map”.

Nov. 27 – Practice / Model Area note:  The loop road in the model area is being used for “Holiday in Lights” display.  Be very careful of lights and displays along and near the road.  There are low stings of lights about 1 foot (0,3m) off the ground on both sides of the road, and many larger displays, some of which have long thin guy wires stretched out to the side.  These are very hard to see in the day.  Come back at night and drive through the light display for $12 per car.  The park closes at dark other than the lights display; definitely no night orienteering in the practice area!  The practice area controls also do not have reflectors.  There will be sample night-O controls near the start on Friday night.

Nov. 27 – Weather forecast as of 11 pm on 11/27 has highs in low to mid 50’s(10 - 12 C) and lows in upper 30’s (2 – 4 C) for the whole weekend, partly to mostly cloudy, with a 50% possibility of rain showers  on Sunday.

Nov. 28 – Early check-in will be open at the Event HQ hotel Friday from 1 pm until 3 pm.

Overview   Orienteering Cincinnati will host 3 races over 3 days in parks Cincinnati, Ohio and Clermont County to the east of Cincinnati, conveniently located within minutes of Greater Cincinnati International Airport (CVG).  Races will have courses for all ages and abilities and will be open to anyone, but there will be additional U.S. Champion awards for eligible individuals running in their age classes in the Night and Ultralong Championships, and to all members of the top three eligible teams in each Relay category.

50% off for first time “A” event attendees   If you are an adult (21+) and this is the first OUSA sanctioned “A” event you have ever attended, Orienteering USA will rebate up to 50% of your event entry fees (event entry only, not including shirts and other extras, maximum rebate of $20).  Click here for the rebate form (pdf file).  Print the form, bring it to the event, get it signed by registrar and mail it in, and you will get a check for 50% of what you paid in entry fees, up to $20.  It is that simple.

The Races   All 3 races are “A” Sanctioned by Orienteering USA.

Friday, November 30 – U.S. Night Course Championships. 1;10,000 map of Mt. Airy Forest, Cincinnati, Ohio.  Interval started race will count for Orienteering USA Rankings.  Starts will begin at about 7 pm.

Saturday, December 1 – U.S. Relay Championships, Most courses will use a 1:10,000 map of McFarlan Woods, Cincinnati, Ohio.  White course will use a 1:5000 map and yellow course will use a 1:7500 map.  Teams of 4, with the first leg mass start at 11 am.  See OUSA rules for team composition.  White level junior-junior relay will also be offered for younger orienteers (teams of two), with a mass start at 10 am.  Here are the rules for forming a relay team (point values, leg order and difficulty).

Sunday, December 2 – U.S. Ultralong Championships, 1:10,000 or 1:15,000 maps of East Fork State Park near Batavia, Ohio.  White, yellow, and orange courses will be interval started beginning around 8:45.  All other courses will have a mass start at 9:30.  Ultralong awards will be given in age classes for ALL courses, although under current OUSA rules, the white, yellow, and orange courses will not be substantially longer than a normal “long” course for those levels.

In addition to the Ultralong Championships, a classic length brown course will be offered.  This will be the only classic length course offered.  The only categories offered on classic brown will be F-18, F 55+, F Brown, M 65+ and M Brown.  Flying Pig medals will be given to the top three in each class on classic brown.   If there are 3 or more entries in age ranges above F55+ and M65+, then additional age level awards will be given for each age group which has 3 or more entries.

See Race Details Page for more information on all races.

Read this page first.  The links below are intended for your convenience AFTER you are familiar with the overall event information.

Courses and Classes

Competitive   All standard O-USA competitive courses and classes will be offered.  Competitive entrants should pre-register.

Recreational   Recreational Courses will be offered on white, yellow, and orange level courses at the Night and Ultralong events, for $10 for individuals, $15 for groups.  Advanced courses may be done "recreational" with permission of Event Director only.  Recreational entrants should register on site on the day of the event, at least 1 hour before the last start time.

Awards   U.S. Champion awards will be given to the top three eligible individuals in each age-group category at the Night and Ultralong Championships.  If the first place overall winner is not U.S. eligible, he/she will receive one of OCIN’s unique Flying Pig medals.  Members of the top three U.S. eligible teams in each relay category will also receive a U.S. Champion medal.  If a first place team is not U.S. eligible, its members will receive a Flying Pig medal.

Electronic Timing   The Sport-Ident electronic punching system will be used for all courses.  All SI card models will work at this event.  If you own an SI card, be sure to put your SI number on the registration form. Rental cards are available.  If you are unfamiliar with SportIdent, see: How to Use Electronic Punching.

Maps   Maps will be custom printed for this event.  Maps of all properties have previously been used for orienteering and may be ordered when registering.

Embargo Information   The following areas may not be used for orienteering or orienteering training prior to these championships:   Mt. Airy Forest (all areas including the parts south of I-74 known as McFarlan Woods), Green Township Bicentennial Park, and the portions of East Fork State Park north of Harsha Lake.

Practice / Training Area   A practice area is planned to be open all day on Friday at Sharon Woods Hamilton County Park, near the event HQ hotel.  Note that the park closes at dark.  A Hamilton County Park motor vehicle permit is needed to enter or lave the park by car and may be purchased at the entrance.  However there is no fee to enter on foot if you choose to jog from the event headquarters hotel or park in the Sharonville city park across Kemper Road on the north side of Sharon Woods.

Safety   All competitors must carry a whistle and dress appropriately for the weather conditions.  You should be prepared for chilly and wet conditions in the event that you suffer an immobilizing injury especially on the night or ultralong events where it could take significant time for assistance to locate and reach you.  Limited deer hunting (archery) is permitted in and adjacent to all venues.  Although our events will avoid prime hunting hours, wearing orange or other bright clothing is recommended.

Weather   Normal highs are around 47 F (8 to 9 C) and normal lows around 31 F (-1 C).  Records for the period range from highs of 70 to 75 F (21 to 24 C) to lows of 0 to 4 F (-18 to -16 C).  See table of daily normal and record temperatures on the Race Details Page .

Saturday Afternoon and Evening Activities

Junior training activity with USA Junior Coach Erin Schirm – Saturday afternoon after the Relay at Bicentennial Park.  This may include both course review, discussion, and in-the-woods activity on the relay map.

US Team Social – Saturday evening at the Holiday Inn (Event HQ) – Meet & greet US Team members as they share experiences from the World Orienteering Championships (WOC 2012).  Light snacks will be available, and there will be a cash bar.  There may also be a game / activity area for juniors available at this time.

Transportation

Ground transportation to sites:       It is possible to reach Mt. Airy by bus, but perhaps not at convenient times, and there is no bus service near East Fork.  A car will likely be necessary to reach the venues.

Airports:         Cincinnati (CVG) is less than 30 minutes from Fri/Sat event sites and al little farther (allow up to an hour) from Sunday’s.  Dayton (DAY), Columbus (CMH), Lexington (LEX) Louisville (SDF), and Indianapolis (IND) and are also reasonable options.

Lodging

Event Headquarters will be the Holiday Inn at I-275, exit 46 (3855 Hauck Rd).  We will have an orienteering special room rate of $75 (plus tax) for all rooms.  The hotel has free wi-fi throughout, hot breakfast included, large indoor pool and fitness center, a small game room, guest laundry, and many other amenities.  Please call the hotel directly at (513) 563-8330 to make your reservation and mention that you are with the "Orienteering Cincinnati" group.  Or use the Orienteering Special Rate link to make reservations online.  The special rate should be good from Wednesday Nov. 28 through Monday, December 3.  The hotel will be the location for the US Team meet and greet social (free hors d’oeuvres provided by OCIN and cash bar) on Saturday evening, and is also very close to the planned model / practice area map.

Motel 6 10% off at Motel 6.  Click here to reserve online   Options (Of these, my choice would be Cincinnati North):

Motel 6 Cincinnati North, #1091, I-275 exit #46 – closest to event headquarters hotel (same exit).

Motel 6, Cincinnati Central, #4441, I-71, exit #8 – possibly a few minutes closer to Fri / Sat event sites.

Motel 6, Cincinnati South, #496, I-75, exit #180, Florence, KY – closest to Cincinnati airport.

Camping   East Fork State Park Campground will be CLOSED this winter due to construction.  The closest state park campgrounds are Cowan Lake and Hueston Woods.

Child Sitting    Because this is a “barebones style event” with minimal volunteer staffing, formal child sitting will not be offered.  We most likely will NOT have heated indoor facilities.  We will accommodate parents with split start times for the night course, if requested.  Please let us know as early as possible if you have children who will need tending during the Ultralong event and we will try to help you work out an appropriate arrangement.

Directions   See the Site Locator Maps for directions to motels and event sites.
