Forest Run MetroPark was first mapped in late
spring 2015 by Gabe Svobodny. At that time the property had just recently
been acquired by MetroParks and many of the fields
were still in their final year of corn production. The park has changed a lot, with constant
updating over the years as fields have grown up with succession vegetation, and
MetroParks has worked to clear invasives,
re-forest some fields, and re-establish healthy native prairie vegetation in
others. New parking and access points
have been added, along with the paved mile-long multi-use path.
Saturday was gorgeous, but storms rolled through after midnight,
followed by gusting winds which ushered in a strong cold front and plummeting
temperatures for Sunday’s event.
Although the rain had stopped by early morning, every step off trail was
soggy, and the chilly wind was a constant companion. Runners on the green and red courses got the
rare treat of crossing New London Rd to the northern Forest Run Nature Preserve
area; only the second time that this northern part of the park has been used
for orienteering.
