A chilly but dry day brought orienteers swarming into Peffer Park on the south side of Oxford, ready to challenge
themselves to Jasper’s challenging set of courses through the Miami University
woodlands and Western Campus. The
parking lot quickly filled, as did one lane of the entrance road and every available
patch of grass that wasn’t too soft and wet to support a vehicle.
The red and green courses started with a short jaunt through the Peffer Woods Trails, then crossed under US 27 for a couple
woodland controls, a sprint through the campus, more woods, and finally a
splash through Collins Run to pick up 3 controls on the south side, before
crossing back to the final control and finish.
All other courses got a taste of the new multi-use trail through Western
Woods, the woods (of course), a sortie through campus, and more woods, but skipped
out on the Peffer Trails and the wet-foot crossings
of Collins Run.
Abundant deer were seen by most; along with various other creatures
great and small.
Following control pickup, a dozen or so orienteers descended on the nearby
home of OCIN President Amy Lamborg, to gorge on her
delicious chili, cole slaw, rice, pumpkin pie, hot
spiced cider, and a selection of wonderfully tempting chocolates.
