The New Year’s Eve was a rainy day, with increasing winds in the afternoon and evening.  Trail conditions were extremely wet and slippery.  Dry Fork Creek was a muddy, swirling torrent.  A few brave Orienteers ventured out in search of 20 controls, with point values of 30 to 80 points each.  Only Nathanael Smith and Jim Benton managed to clear the course.

 

Shortly after 6, we lost power to the cabin.  Fortunately, after a few calls, a utility crew quickly responded.  We had no idea that the outage was actually a downed power line inside the competition area, or that our cabin and the parking lot lighting were the only place without power, until a few of the competitors encountered the utility crew and had to adjust their routes to avoid the problem.  Power was restored about 9:30.

 

Special Thanks to Butler County Sheriff Dispatch and Butler Rural Electric Cooperative for their help getting power restored to the park cabin, especially the linemen who had to do their own orienteering, following the lines up the thickly wooded hill to locate and fix the problem.

 

Overnight, the light rain gave way to light flurries, which continues off and on through out much of New Year’s Day.  Late afternoon brought a gap or two in the clouds and a very fleeting glimpse of the sun.   Several of the volunteers then adjourned to a delicious lasagna prepared by OCIN President Amy Lamborg at her home in Oxford.
