Orienteering Cincinnati Events

Public is welcome at all events, unless specifically noted in the announcement. Beginners are always welcome and basic instruction is offered at no charge. OCIN Events are held rain, shine, or snow. In the event of severe storm or snow emergency, check this site on the morning of event.

Sat, Feb 27, 2021     TROL / WARS 14, Pyramid Hill, Hamilton, OH
    Range of courses for all ages, from white to red. Event Directors: Jasper Ralinovsky and Amy Lamborg. Starts are open from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Control pickup begins at 3 pm.
    Pre-registration for this event is required. Registration closes at 9 pm Friday, Feb. 26. Please help our volunteers by registering early. You may also view who's registered. Entry fee for individual TROL / WARS events is $10 for members or $15 for non-members.
    Pyramid Hill has a park entry fee which is NOT included in TROL or WARS season pass fees. ($8 for adults, $3 for youth, children under 5 are free - Note: AAA members and Military ID holders get $2 off adult admission). We are collecting the Pyramid Hill entry fee with your pre-registration.
    You can also support Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park by purchasing an annual membership in Pyramid Hill, which gets you free entry to the park and discounts to their special events like their holiday lights display. You may have recently read about Pyramid Hill in the news for their key role in saving the Fortified Hill Hopewell earthworks from development. You can also donate to the preservation of Fortified Hill.
    RestroomsThere is one portable toilet in the visitour center parking lot. Our registration / event center is in an open-sided pavilion north of the visitor center parking lot.

Mar 6 - 7, 2021     TROL / WARS Season Final, General Butler SP, Carrollton, KY
    This will be a joint OCIN / OLOU weekend with FOUR EVENTS on a NEW MAP at General Butler State Park near Carrollton, KY. There will be plenty of orienteering to make this a fun-tastic weekend. The park also has mini-golf and other activities.
    Pre-registration is required and will close at 9 pm on Wed, March 3.
    General Butler State Park will be holding 30 lodge rooms and 4 2-bedroom cottages for our group at special rates. You must make your reservations directly with the park, before Feb. 1. (rooms could sell out sooner). Lodge rooms $79.95 per night plus taxes and resort fee; 2 bedroom cottages $114.95 plus taxes and resort fee. To make a reservation, call the park at (502) 732-4384. Our group code is 5175, which can also be used to make your reservation online. All accommodations are non-smoking and there is an additional fee for pets in lodge rooms or cottages. There is also camping available.
    Saturday will be the TROL / WARS Season Finale with a full range of regular courses from white to red. TROL and WARS season awards will be presented later that afternoon, tentatively at 4 pm.
    Saturday Night - Night Score-O Course with a 2 hour time limit. Find as many of the controls as you can, in any order, but return within 2 hours or lose points. Start times will be assigned between 6:30 and 7, with youngest and less experienced orienteers being assigned earlier start times. Sunset is approximately 6:40.
    Sunday Morning will be a Team Relay, hosted by OLOU, staggered starts from 10 am. 3 person teams, with a points system based on age and gender. Courses will be short and fast. So everyone can participate. There will be 3 categories based on the total number of age/gender points. Link to relay courses and point structure. Don't have a team? Don't worry, we can find a team for you! If you would like to be on an OCIN relay team, please add your name to this spreadsheet.
    Sunday Afternoon will be a Search and Destroy Score-O. This will collect all of the controls from the weekend. If you get to a control first, you get to bring it back and score points. How many can you get to first?
    Event Fees: Any single event: $10 for members; $15 for non-members. The Sat TROL/WARS event is free for TROL/WARS season pass holders. Weekend pass (all 4 events): TROL/WARS pass holders $20; Members of OCIN, OLOU, OBLUE, ICO, or other OUSA club: $30; Non-members: $40.     Directions: General Butler State Resort Park, 1608 KY Route 227, Carrollton, KY 41008. From I-71 between Cincinnati and Louisville, take exit 44 to KY 227. From either direction, turn right (north toward Carrollton) on 227. Go about 1.7 to 2 miles and turn left on the park entrance road. Once you enter the park, watch for "orienteering" signs.

    Rescheduled to June 5-6. 3 hour (Saturday) and 6 hour (Sunday) rogaines in southwest Pennsylvania, Raccoon Creek State Park. teams or solos permitted. Registration opens January 1; events have a registration limit and usually fill up with registration closing within 2 to 3 days.

Following an easy map, kids can collect a different color plastic egg at each checkpoint. When finishing, turn in the eggs for a choice of candy or toy from our treasure chest. Egg hunt course is $4 per child. For other courses, regular entry fee is $10 for members or $15 for non-members; $2 discount if you have your own SI card.
    MetroParks of Butler County Motor Vehicle Permit is required and will be available on site. Butler County residents may get a 2021-2022 permit free with proof of residency. Non-residents may buy a 2021 annual for $15 or a daily for $8. We use MetroParks of Butler County for several events each year.

    bid to host Junior Nationals is possible. National event, FDR State Park, Georgia. The current plan for Georgia Navigator Cup 2021 is 3 days of races (Sat-Sun-Mon), with no Extreme-O this year. Details are still in flux.

April - May, 2021     Home School Orienteering Workshops, Cincinnati, Ohio
    These will be offered on 3 consecutive Tuesdays in different area parks. In cooperation with Cincinnati Parks Explore Nature - This is an introductory program geared toward home school students and their families in which you'll learn the basics of orienteering and be able to explore the park on up to 3 different courses of beginner to intermediate difficulty.
    Online Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Home school students and families are welcome to attend any of these 3 workshop dates in different Cincinnati Parks, or come join us for all 3 of them! Children of all ages are welcome.
    Pre-registration fees: For one workshop $10 for 1 child, $18 for 2 or more children; For 2 workshops: $18 for 1 child, $32 for 2 or more children; For all 3 workshops: $24 for one child, $42 for 2 or more children. Day-of-event registration is $15 per child, if space is available. Parent may participate with their child(ren) at no extra charge.

    Rescheduled August 28. OCIN will host one of the "Challenge" stations in the annual Amazing Charity Race. Volunteers will be needed to staff our challenge, but we can't reveal exactly what the challenge will involve. The Amazing Charity Race (from their website) is a fun, quirky, adventure that challenges the contestants agility, balance, coordination, strength, intelligence, problem solving skills, fine motor skills, and most importantly, their sense of humor.

Sat, Nov 6, 2021     Twisted Run IV, Centennial Park, Plymouth, Indiana
    OCIN's South Bend chapter brings back the annual Twisted Run. Easy (white to yellow level difficulty) navigation (long 6.6 km and short 3.2 km versions) with a mass start. A few navigation decisions will give navigators the chance to outsmart the speedsters. Mass start at 11 am.
    This will be a fundraiser for the Orienteering USA Junior National Team, with all proceeds going to the national team.
   
    Park entry or vehicle permit fees: none. Restroom facilities: modern, indoor. Event center: outdoors, open-sided shelter building.
