Public is welcome at all events, unless specifically noted in the announcement. Beginners are always welcome and basic instruction is offered at no charge. OCIN Events are held rain, shine, or snow. In the event of severe storm or snow emergency, check this site on the morning of event.

    Starts are open 10 am to 2 pm; white thru green courses. This event is part of the annual Cincinnati Great Outdoors Weekend (GOW). This event is also part of Miami University Natural Areas Hike-athon Plus. Visit various exhibits and try various other outdoor activities including hikes, guided bird-watching walks, etc. A naturalist from Hueston Woods will be there with live raptors (hawks and owls). There are usually free samples of all-natural food or drink, and sometimes free native plants or seelings to take home.

Oct 12-14, 2018     Camp Friedlander Scout-O
    Weekend camporee for boy scouts, girl scouts, and other scouting type youth groups at Camp Friedlander. Events will include navigation training activities on Saturday morning, team courses on Saturday afternoon, a Saturday evening Night score-orienteering course, and the Sunday morning Scout Orienteering Championships. Pre-registration will be required; link to more information and online registration This event will be only for boy scouts, girl scouts, and other scouting-type organizations. However, many volunteers will be needed, please contact Greg Fasig or Mike Minium to volunteer.

    National Orienteering Championships: Middle Distance Friday afternoon, Sprint (probably 2 stages) Sat morning, Long course Sun morning. Organized by OCIN and SMOC (Southern Michigan Orienteering Club)
    Event Information. Online registration is now open.
    Embargo: The following areas may not be used for orienteering training, and may not be entered to gain knowledge of the terrain, prior to the championships: 1. St Patrick's County Park (St. Joseph County, Indiana), M Bertrand County Park (Berrien County Michigan), and adjacent land owned by Archdiocese of Ft Wayne. 2. Centennial Park in Plymouth, Indiana, and adjacent lands belonging to Plymouth Community School Corporation. 3. The area known as Bishop Lake, and Brighton Recreation Area near Brighton, Michigan

Friday, Oct. 26, 2018     "Trail of Treats", Rentschler Forest MetroPark Hamilton, Ohio
    For kids: Very easy white level course. Kids can collect tokens at each control, which can be exchanged for a bag of candy at the finish.
    For all: Twilight / Night score-style course. This course will include more difficult control locations and offer the additional challenge of finding controls in the dark.
    Starts are open from 5 pm until 8 pm. Come before 6 to finish the course in daylight; come later for added challenge and to brave the spooky surprises that may lurk in the darkness. Event in cooperation with MetroParks of Butler County. Event fee is $4 per child, $10 family maximum. MetroParks motor vehicle permit is required and may be obtained at the event. Permit is free for Butler county residents with ID. For non-residents, permit is $5 daily or $10 annual.

Sun, Oct. 28, 2018     OCIN / REI Orienteering Workshop
    This is an introductory workshop for people who are interested in learning or developing navigational skills. Participants will learn to orienteer using a detailed map, and to use the map with a compass. The training will be a combination of classroom and outdoor "in the woods" training. Skills will be taught and participants will practice in a safe and controlled environment. All ages welcome. Wear comfortable clothes for outdoor activity. Hiking boots, trail shoes, or running shoes are recommended. Bring a compass if you have one, but don't buy one if you don't. Loaners will be available and you can try different types.
    time: 9 am to 1 pm. Check-in opens at 8:30. Please arrive by 8:50 as there is a short walk from the parking area to the training center. Participants are welcome to stay beyond 1:00 to complete additional courses if desired.
    Online pre-registration is now open. Fees: Adult member $30, Adult non-member $50. Youth age 20 or under $10 member, $20 non-member. Event Director: Greg Fasig Co-sponsored by REI

    Full range of courses from white to red. Start times 11 am - 1 pm. Normal OCIN event fees: $7 for members, $10 for non-members, $2 discount if you own your own SI card, free for TROL and WARS season pass holders.

    Locator Map. Directions: From I-275, take I-71 north for 6.2 miles, and take exit 24 to Western Row Rd. Turn right on Western Row Rd for 1.3 miles. Turn left on Socialville-Foster Rd for 1 mile. Turn left on Old 3C highway for less than 0.1 mile, then turn right to stay on old 3C highway for 0.1 mile. Turn right on Foster-Maineville Rd for 0.3 mile, then right on Butterworth Rd for 0.5 mile and watch for the camp entrance on the right.

    An all-day training program geared mainly toward students participating in the TROL youth league, but open to everyone. There will be an alternating mix of indoor instruction and outdoor courses and training activities. Be prepared to be outside several times throughout the day.
